Specialized Shipping
When it comes to Specialized Shipping we often refer to freight-goods that are large in size, weight, dimensions, or demand special handling and services during transit. Specialized shipping services and equipment enable shippers with specialized freight to transport freight safely and efficiently. The scope of what can be considered specialized is vast and includes construction and mining sectors, white glove services as well as the transport of hazardous materials.
A hazardous material or dangerous goods are defined as a substance or material that the US Department of Transportation (DOT), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have determined can be capable of posing an unreasonable risk to health, safety, and property when transported in commerce, and is designated as hazardous.
When it comes to identifying dangerous goods, the class is determined by the nature of danger they may present and fall under nine categories:
- Class 1: Explosives
- Class 2: Gasses
- Class 3: Flammable liquids
- Class 4: Flammable solids
- Class 5: Oxidizing agents & organic peroxides
- Class 6: Toxins and infectious substances
- Class 7: Radioactive material
- Class 8: Corrosives
- Class 9: Miscellaneous dangerous goods
